Android@lemdro.id•Nova Launcher’s new owner, Instabridge, is ‘evaluating’ ads, and some users already report seeing them.English
2·2 months agoJust nailed down my Octopi setup today after abandoning Nova and so far enjoying it. A handful of things feel unintuitive, but some of it may be habits from a decade plus using Nova. The reachable drawer, where you can have it at first only open about halfway, is awesome. The worst part has been the lack of comprehensive search (apps, files, web, all in one). Installed Sesame to cover that and it’s been fine.

Technology@lemmy.world•Quick post about AI-free FireFox Based Browsers (Keep your Addons and avoid the Bloat)English
7·2 months agoI use Librewolf on my work and personal desktops, then Waterfox on my Android. I prefer Waterfox, but I find the logo so lame looking I settle for Librewolf. The OOTB settings for LW are super strict and a slog to deal with unless disabled. WF feels like using FF in just about every way.

TechTakes@awful.systems•Firefox browser falls to AI. What do we do now?English
31·3 months agostarted switching and testing options last week. Librewolf’s default are awful, but undoing that has been better than having to look at the ugly Waterfox logo, in my opinion. If the logo is a non issue for you, WF had better default settings. I’m overly particular

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats the worst book anyone has ever recommended you?English
16·3 months agoHaha that trilogy might be my favorite of all time but I also TOTALLY get that take. I’m just a big fucking sucker for the second and third books as they get increasingly ridiculous.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the story behind your username and avatar?English
2·3 months agoDrew a comic that made the front page of reddit over a decade ago. Family and friends noticed it and identified me because the username wasn’t subtle if you knew me, personally. Ditched the account immediately and used a generator, which came up with this. Decided to re-use it for shits and gigs. For those wondering: no, neither the comic nor the account of mine had anything weird or inappropriate, I just appreciate a certain level of privacy in most online communities.
Bunch of lumber and stuff I was already planning on buying as I finish my basement, like a laser level.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Pokemon Legends Z-A is ‘the best-selling physical game of the year so far’ in the USEnglish
5·4 months agoI’ve enjoyed Ultraviolet. I remember seeing a clip of a fan made pokemon game that had a pretty unique art style. I think they remade it unreal 5? It looked nice, but I haven’t been able to locate it for awhile so perhaps it either got taken down or was fake.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•pwned: do you pronounce it as "pohned" "pawned" or "owned"English
4·4 months agoThis clip from Brooklyn 99 uses what I consider to be the only two acceptable pronunciations. The first obviously the silly way, the second the proper.

BLAM
I know I could search for this online, but word of mouth is so often superior and it also feels like kinda the point of lemmy…but got any recs for some punk or punk adjacent bands/albums? Particularly recent stuff or old if it holds up to the current climate. I got into RATM around this time last year and nothing else has come close to scratching the itch of “maaaan fuck this shit.”
(In addition to the stuff mentioned in your original comment, of course!)
Edit: seems like this thread is building a bit of a list on its own, actually!!

Something about that fills me with joy every time I see the movie.

Programming@programming.dev•Do you guys use AI when programming? If so, how?English
3·5 months agoArchitect here, not a programmer. I’ve taken Python classes but was never good enough too use it regularly. Using Gemini, I’ve been able to work through creating half a dozen scripts for automating tedious tasks and optimizing models/drawings. I’m hoping to improve myself so I can eventually make use of it for even more useful things, but as a start it’s been awesome. Not perfect, it makes a lot of mistakes, but I’ve been able to work with it to get things right.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s a piece of advice you got as a kid that still sticks with you?English
16·7 months agoIn grade school I remember looking up at a brightly colored sign above the door that read, “you are not your circumstance.” Decades later, I still think about it as a reminder to treat myself and others a little better.
On mobile but look up TRASH guides. That’s what I used in my setup and I’m able to watch stuff almost as soon as it downloads and I still let it seed for awhile after. Also using Unraid, Arr apps, and Jellyfin.
Our musical tastes seem almost perfectly aligned, so I’ll try and throw out a few curve balls:
- AJR - pretty corny, but fuck if almost every song ain’t a bop.
- The Districts - A Flourish and a Spoil
- Mansions - Dig Up the Dead
- Stop Light Observations - oRANGE.
- Disco Elysium Soundtrack has been my go to of late when I don’t want lyrics cluttering my head.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What higher/specialized ed do you have? How'd it help you get/keep your job?English
3·1 year agoMasters in Architecture. Required to become a licensed architect. Almost every facet of the job can be done without a degree/license. Most of my coworkers only have a bachelor’s, if that. You typically just get paid more and can get more responsibilities (and, by extension, liability) with a license.

I mainly use Cloudflare for buying domains and DNS settings. Are there better, more resilient alternatives? I am not savvy enough for a hyper custom setup. I think I’ve seen Porkbun mentioned. I’ve used name cheap before. I do pay for NextDNS - is that something that could fit into this? I don’t think so but maybe I’m underutilizing it.
