  • “How impressed everybody is” is the basis of money, law, self-worth and our models of reality

    Money

Is it? I don’t try to impress anybody with money I do or don’t have. If you do, consider not doing so. You might find your finances in a better state.

    self-worth

Don’t, I repeat, do not base your self worth on what other people think. Listen to their input and make yourself the best person you can be. But if you only have self-worth due to how impressed your neighbors are, you are going to have a very poor life as you make a continued bad decisions.

    Law

There are vanishingly few laws that are centered around impressing anybody. The core theme to is to create laws that best allow for the functioning of society. For some easy examples, lack of criminalizing murder, lack of property rights, or lack of a tax code all fuck up modern society pretty quick.

    our models of reality

I’m not sure how ‘impressing others’ is part of this at all? Our model of reality, ie physics, chemistry, math, have nothing to do with impressing others?

  • Why wouldn’t it cook a non-bread?

    • You will almost certainly have to stick a fork down into the vertical style bread toaster to retrieve the hotdog, which is hella unsafe.
    • It’s also almost impossible to clean the vertical style ones, which isn’t a problem for bread since the extra bits just burn off, but it is a problem for other foods like meats, as bits can easily rot in there.
    • Meats can also drip grease onto the elements, which will cause a fire.

I’m not sure what cookware you have, but it sounds like you may be pretty limited on choices/space. I would highly recommend swapping the vertical toaster for a toaster oven. As they are basically little ovens that you can cook almost anything in, including toast and hotdogs.

  • I’m not sure how much time you are given and how much ‘hands on’ is desired, but you could buy a bunch of cheap, old, used desktops (that all use the same parts) and teach the kids what the various parts do (CPU, GPU, motherboard, PSU, SSD, RAM). Then have them build the computers and install linux on them.

Maybe pre-wire the PSU to most of the parts to save time during the build day(s). You may also want to have the CPUs pre-installed so you don’t get bent pins galore.

This entire idea would be massively benefited by a TA that could assist working with groups.

But it’s getting so hard nowadays

It’s a sliding scale; it isn’t just ‘full privacy’ or ‘no privacy’. Everyone makes compromises somewhere based on their personal preferences. Most people would agree posting their credit card number on a public forum is too far into the ‘no privacy’ band, for example.

how does privacy improve the world

It’s up to you, but I don’t like trusting my personal info with untrustworthy companies.
