Bulls can take offense to your existence if you get too close or it is mating season, and Cows will protect their calves, but in general moose are docile and normally avoid humans. The fact one was spotted in the middle of a city means it is an outlier for any number of reasons (rabies?) and as such all bets are off.

Last time I visited the customs office emptied out into a literal ghetto. Like, an entire 4 blocks of ought-to-be-condemned housing with rusted out patchwork wrecks abandoned in yards and on the street (or worse following behind you). The corner gas station had more security features than most prisons in Canada, and every street sign had numerous bullet holes. That was their welcome mat 2 decades ago. F that shithole country.

It’s important to remember the word ‘ideal’ that dictates the conditions needed. The gas cannot be mixing with an ‘external’ source, gaining or losing energy to it’s surroundings beyond the changes being specifically examined, is not subject to any forces or conditions not considered, and so on…

You’re literally asking ‘at what point are perfect conditions, impossible to every truly achieve, implausible?’. The answer to that: as soon as any factor cannot be simply ignored for the sake of simplifying the math.

My favourite technique learnt during Lifeguard training was The Eggbeater. Basically picture yourself sitting in a kitchen chair but whirling your lower legs in opposite directions. You do this very loosely and slowly. It allows you to tread water while leaving your hands free. You ‘can’ use your hands by slowly sweeping your arms out wide forwards and backwards but this is only to reduce the workload so that you can very easily stay afloat with minimal effort (without floation devices).

The same technique can propel you on your back by simply leaning back a bit. It is good because it uses different muscles than typical flutter kicking etc. so you can switch it up if you get tired.

That said, you can make products that have similar functions so long as you aren’t copying too closely. For example, Lemmy vs. Reddit. Both are social media platforms allowing posting and up/downvoting. But the nuts and bolts are significantly different.

Your parents are right. It is absolutely a skill that you should learn. The ‘times have changed’ crowd just haven’t stepped up to the new level of difficulty.

It is not wrong to strike up a conversation with a stranger so long as the setting is appropriate and you pick up on the clues they give on whether the interaction is welcome or not. That is the skill you’re learning.

Whether it is technically ‘necessary’ is debatable, but it is antisocial to flat out avoid doing so by definition.
