No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Has the use of a comma instead of the word "and" in English news headlines always been a thing?English
762·7 months agoIt’s a thing that comes from the era of printed newspapers. Every word took up valuable space and cost a lot of ink when printed on millions of papers.
If you could cut a word from a headline and still make perfect sense to readers, you did it. There were no sentences which readers couldn’t understand if you replaced all the ands with commas, so it became the standard for newspaper headlines to do so.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Can you read and understand this passage?English
1·7 months agoI would argue that passages like this (Monte cristo) train you to understand OP’s slob: “I was then almost assured that the inheritance had neither profited the Borgias nor the family, but had remained unpossessed like the treasures of the Arabian Nights, which slept in the bosom of the earth under the eyes of the genie.”
Also, Oliver twist is by the same author as op.

4·7 months agoIt’s a tiling window manager, equivalent of AwesomeWM, but more similar to i3wm and swaywm. It does have built in window transparency effects.
yep, btrfs snapshots. If you find setting that up difficult, Garuda OS comes with btrfs set up out of the box.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How is it to have very pale skin in America?English
16·8 months agoHaving any skin other than what you have is how you experience racism in America.
sameeee, but i can’t think of where I would wear it…
Edit: thought of one situation, but “a farmer’s market on an overcast day where it’s chilly but not too cold” seems like too specific a situation to buy a piece of clothing for.
The cloth is a shawl and the metal pin is a brooch.
I believe it’s just a long rectangle with tassels on the two shorter sides.
do you think in a specific language?
