The northwest territories were north and west of the original thirteen colonies, more or less. They are not more north east of the country as a whole, because westward expansion continued.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why did things have to get this obvious before people realized the truth?
1·11 days agoThelose are just “other rich people” that have the good sense to stay out of the public eye.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why did things have to get this obvious before people realized the truth?
27·12 days agoA network of rich and powerful people influencing the state isn’t “the deep state” it’s “the state”
Like what makes anyone think they are hiding it?

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•What's preventing a General Strike in the United States?
16·14 days agoEnough unions to organize it.
If I know it’s me, “mine some Bitcoin” if I don’t necessarily know it’s me? “You transitioned… Me”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is your life better or worse than your parents (I mean specifically your parents, *not* your parent's generation)? (Specify country)
2·23 days agoWorse economically. Mom had a union job into getting her associates into well paid career in healthcare. Parents bought a house, new cars, jet ski, went on vacations. I don’t have any of that. I’m working on a trailer and land to put it on. I made better romantic decisions, so better that way. Dad was drafted, so better that way.
I’m trans, so if I were born into their generation it would have been way worse for me.
Pretty sure they both had better sex lives than I have but that’s my own choices.

Technology@lemmy.world•Stephen Colbert says CBS didn't air Rep. James Talarico interview out of fear of FCCEnglish
11·26 days agoTalerico. Brings his sincerity, faith, and working class background in in one of the poorest school districts in the country. He has integrity and and a way of invoking Christianity that I think resonates in Texas. He appeals to a broad swath of voters without compromising his progressive ideals.
I would vote for Crocket if she wasn’t up against Talerico. But as is, I think he has a better shot at the general and I trust him more.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who were some of your childhood heroes that turned out to be horrible people?
3·1 month ago“Jesus was probably cool, but nobody gives a fuck about him.”
Around here, if I meet someone that talks about God, then maybe they are cool. Maybe not, but they are probably the normal amount of religious. If they talk about Jesus, they are hundred percent batshit. They think trans people and gay people are the same thing, and both are a threat to children, unlike their pastor, who is not allowed to let children sit on his lap anymore because he fell to temptation that one (4!) time(s!).

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•'Fake it till you make it' insinuates fakers stop being fake, once they make it; reality seems to suggest otherwise
8·1 month agoExactly. A lot of getting good at something is practicing. No one wants to spend time doing something they suck at, especially in public, but rather than practice in private, we can try to trick ourselves into believing we are actually already talented, faking it to get the practice that is needed to build the skill.
This might also help with mild imposter syndrome.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Would the United States actually risk a Tiananmen Square incident?
7·1 month agoHard disagree. Their base will believe anything.
If we set up gas chambers in Florida some people would be insisting they were harmless showers while they were being forced into them.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Would the United States actually risk a Tiananmen Square incident?
271·1 month agoYep, there is no organization capable of staging armed opposition to the government. A series of mass shootings and maybe some explosives is all we are going to get.
Given the number of incidents, I wouldn’t be shocked if historians decide later we are already living through it. Political assasinations in Minnesota, the attempted murder of pelosi’s husband, attempted trump shooter, charkie Kirk, the car bomb in Memphis that didn’t go off a few years ago. The United Healthcare CEO hit. Attempted kidnapping of Gretchen Whitmer.
There is plenty of violence to go around, but nothing that would rise to civil war.
I have imagined a scenario where a debt crisis degrades the capacity of the federal government and polarization leaves citizens and national guard more loyal to their state than the federal government, but we are a long way away from that.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Should I be trying to leave the USA before it's too late?
41·2 months agoNorthern Europe is much more likely to experience a surge of poverty because of global financial meltdown than a hot war with Russia.
If you are living and working in a liberal area you might be better off looking for work in northern Europe than claiming refugee status. Refugees from the US are extremely likely to be returned here. I read Ireland is going to start accepting trans Americans but even that doesn’t guarantee good treatment.
Do get your passport. There are low cost options for stringing tourist visas together in South America and South East Asia. 25 grand could keep you comfortable for years. That’s a long time to find steady remote work.
I was struggling in college. Substitute teaching part time, and playing a whole lot of dungeons and dragons.
I was also realizing that I was not a man.
Both. Definitely both. Our minds can experience two emotions at once.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•At this point, what should we do about the ICE raids? If an ICE agent breaks in without a warrant or holds you at gunpoint, what do you do?
51·2 months agoThat’s a calculation each of us has to make personally. If you are white, a citizen, have people that rely on you, and are wealthy enough that they can fight a legal battle for you, maybe don’t resist and hope for the best. If you are none of those, and you think you might get sent to a concentration camp or Africa, maybe defend yourself as best you can.
Good luck to everyone.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Would you rather eat a totato (potato that tastes like a tomato) or a pomato (tomato that tastes like a potato)?
2·2 months agoThere is a right answer, it’s the totato.

Is requiring a guy to wear a condom over the top?
No. Definitely not over the top. No other information is needed. If you were married for 20 years and you wanted condoms your husband should respect that.
