No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How is Alexander the Great so great he gets that name, but not so great that just “Alexander”doesn’t disambiguate him?
1·4 days agoAnd the title of Caesar more rightfully translated would be “God King”. It implied divinity and super human levels of being.
God being a roman god, not the christian god. So not omnipotent, omnipresent, or omniscient. But still divine.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What would the next pres of USA have to do to gain back trust for America? Hold a televised event saying the last person was just a fuck up?
7·5 days agoGood or evil in this case doesnt really matter. The key was consistency. America had been a world stabilizer for almost 100 years(even if the world stabilization was achived by destabilizing other nations). The world relied on that concept for global trade and the markets that brought with it.
That illusion is now shattered. The world knows its always a 4 year election cycle away from complete chaos. The trust to be earned back will take as long as it takes for humanity to forget. And it would also require us to be stable for that ammount of time. This means a minimum of the lifetimes of the people currently alive and possibly never.
But i am betting it never recovers to the same degree. America isnt the same power today as it was when it gained its place in the world. And China / europe are more powerful now than they were in the 50’s. We are no longer a world leader in education, manufacturing etc. Its possible we could speed up the recovery with some political changes to the system, but i dont have much hope for it. It would require the people in power doing things agaisnt their own interests.
I mean… clearly hes wearing a white shirt with ai or photoshop on top of it.
Not enough gravity, the atmosphere will drift away from the planet with the help of solar winds etc. Too much gravity, and the ammount of fuel you need to leave the plannet weighs more than the rocket the fuel is being used to lift can carry.
Even in our current ships, most of the fuel used to leave orbit is really used to carry the other fuel you need later.
Sorry, you are correct. I didnt mean to say gog is straight up better than steam, though it does sound like thats what i meant. Writing a thoughtful rant on the toilet is difficult.
But in some ways, gog is better. Not all ways. Also the competition in this space has forced steam to do better. The retun policy was really only implemented due to competition for example.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Recommendations on games in which you don't play as the "good guy".
5·27 days agoHad to scroll too far to find this one.
The 2nd one is better in some minor ways, but the OG is a classic
Steam has had monopolistic policies. There just so benign compared to other monopolies of the current time, that they seem pedestrian.
Im not anti steam, but i try to never be pro any company.
Digital markets are naturally monopolistic. If there are no other barriers in a market, a single solution will rise to the top. Once it has gained enough market share, the “network effect” and incumbancy are often enough to keep it in power, even if the product degrades. Leaving steam is difficult, even when a better solution exists ( like gog) due to separated game libraries and friend groups.
See the following examples: Amazon, facebook, youtube, google, instagram, X
Amazon has many examples of enshitification. Higher prices, worse search, paid promotion of products etc.
Facebook adds, social experimentation and propaganda machine.
Youtube removes the dislike button, more advertisements and recommendation algorithm pushing conspiracy theories.
Hell. Here we are, a small group of people who left reddit because of their anti consumer policies. But lemmy is still no competition, and getting smaller by the day.
Markets are not the solution to monopoly, they are the creator. Its the natural end state of competition.
Its freak in the sheets… its supposed to ryme… this broke me today.
“No pain, no increase”
Hes even a rapper. WTH…
If more than 50% of the people in the us keep voting for war mongers, its not really “overwhelmingly unpopular”. Its just full of people who say they dont like it, but vote for it anyway. So they are either cognitive idiots, or hypocrites.

Technology@lemmy.world•Claude Code deletes developers' production setup, including its database and snapshots — 2.5 years of records were nuked in an instantEnglish
14·2 months agoIm also confused. Do these people not have some sort of version control and backups? Even if the AI did it, no one has backups? Did the ai also delete the backups and repos? If the building burnt down, would they be in the same situation, it just wouldnt make it to the news?

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•I was on social media before web browsers existed. I am Legion.
11·2 months agoI have a 5 digit steam ID, made on the 3rd day steam existed. Back when we all hated the concept of it.
Phillips was going to be the square head, but there pattent / licencing issues i think. Torx is my fav now, but i also understand that its expensive and complicated to manufacture, especially in the past.
They said controversial. Pretty sure the majority of the planet agrees with you.
Not only expanding, but accelerating in expansion.
I just wish i didnt have to own 2 sets of tools. Even if we officially swap, im still going to have to keep 2 sets because of all the legacy junk around.
Really though, phillips heads screws bother me more than anything else. There literally designed, on purpose to strip.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Earbud question: Does anyone actually like to silicone tipped earbuds over the solid plastic ones?
1·2 months agoThere was a company that did hybrid tips. Memory foam but with silicone outer shell. This made them stay clean, while also blocking sound and great fit. But the ones I bought are no longer available and I have not yet found a replacement.
