Android@lemdro.id•Here's a look at how Android 17 will make alternative app stores easier to useEnglish
22·1 day agoThat is impossible because Google will be legally required to make these changes as part of the Epic lawsuit. They have already lost the case to the Supreme Court and they have kind of settled with Epic before the court made a decision. If they back out then Epic will absolutely kill them in court again.
Technically they can make these changes in US only but that would probably be too much to make basically 2 different OS for US and ROW

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I never understood what it was people did on Twitter. I understand it even less now that it is X.
10·1 day agoProbably unpopular opinion: people hate “the algorithm” but you really need one for websites like Twitter; Mastodon feels absolutely dead due to lack of one. Just hashtags aren’t enough, a post looks ridiculous the more you put them.
I wish I didn’t have to use them but Reddit and Twitter are the go to for anything about local news and sports, and I occasionally see some absolutely banging content from people I’m not subscribed from their feeds.

41·1 day agoThis is due to the Epic lawsuit, the app store will be treated as an actual “app store” rather than a standard app which will have its own advantages
In fact any registered app store will basically have an almost play store like experience I suppose rather than having the standard extra resistance provided when you install an app currently

This is the result of an already years long lawsuit. Google can’t drag it for long, in fact initially they were given only 2 weeks after the decision to implement this but like I said they’ve settled with Epic to make these changes from Android 17 onwards
