Technology@lemmy.world•Stack Overflow in freefall: 78 percent drop in number of questionsEnglish
181·3 days agoI was contributing to SO in 2014-2017 when my job wanted our engineers to be more “visible” online.
I was in the top 3% and it made me realize how incredibly small the community was. I was probably answering like 5 questions a week. It wasn’t hard. For some perspective, I’m making like 4-5 posts on Lemmy A DAY.
What made me really pissed was how often a new person would give a really good answer, then some top 1% chucklefuck would literally take that answer, rewrite it, and then have it appear as the top answer. And that happened to me constantly. But again, I didn’t care since I’m just doing this to show my company I’m a “good lil engineer”.
I stopped participating because of how they treated new users. And around 2020(?), SO made a pledge to be not so douchy and actually allow new users to ask questions. But that 1% chucklefuck crew was still allowed to wave their dicks around and stomp on people’s answers. So yeah, less “Duplicate questions”, more “This has been answered already [link to their own answer that they stole]”.
So they removed the toxic attitude with asking questions, but not the toxicity when answering. SO still had the most sweaty people control responses, including editing/deleting them. And you can’t grow a community like that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Raspberry Pis are cheaper than Mini PCs againEnglish
5·5 days agoSorry, stupid question because I don’t pay attention to embedded hardware stuff. Not at all trying to be offensive or start anything. I really am ignorant.
In the software space, many FOSS run for-profit to keep the open-source version funded.
What’s different in this situation?

Technology@lemmy.world•That time Apple sent everyone a U2 album: 'I DONT WANT YOU.'English
19·5 days agoI was there and I went from not knowing anything about U2 to absolutely hating it all.
Until I expanded my music tastes, I only had rap and hip-hop in my playlist. And suddenly this Bono guy just shows up? 🤬

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft Office has been renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot app”English
7·6 days agoTheir most idiotic name ever was whatever the Xbox branding bullshit was. It was so bad, customers didn’t know which one to buy.
I like how OP points out a cultural issue, and everyone in the comments explains how to use the loophole.
If you need a loophole to deal with some bullshit, you’re part of the problem.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI content on Wikipedia - found via a simple ISBN checksum calculator (39C3)English
12·13 days agoWhich is kinda my favorite thing to do as of late, and what I prefer AI be used for.
I’m not taking about building a suite of black box tools. But tiny scripts to scrape, shape, and generate reports. Things I used to pull in a dozen node libraries to do and manually configure and patch up.
You know, busy work.
Ah yeah don’t take shit post too seriously.
For me, this meme was just a Matrix joke.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who is an artist or public figure you still enjoy despite them being cancelled for bad behaviour?
5·17 days agoI argue about this all the time, especially if you have to work with non-coders. People who don’t code do not understand the big picture.
Steve Wozniak is brilliant, and had Steve Jobs explain the vision and sell it to non coders.
For Microsoft. That was Ballmer.
If youre a tech lead who lets a group of marketing folks try to define the course of any application, you need someone really strong at communication to fight for you. Unfortunately, Linus didnt have one and ripping people a new asshole was the next best thing.

5·17 days agoHe is why I believe in lead poisoning.
Too many times do I see creators who were brilliant and pushing a really specific forward thinking agenda, only for 1-2 decades later to be completely against it.

It’s the reason HP is banned in this household.

Cartoons were not at all well respected as a method of storytelling back in the day. And Walt threw himself into the fire pretty often to strike success and build the Disney empire.

321·17 days agoPrivileged white folk really don’t realize how much good Bill Cosby has done for poor kids. He contributed an insane amount to the community. He supported schools programs financially and helped a whole generation of black folk.
And when the news came out, you better believe we were all in the 5 stages of grief.
Just a complete 180 on his entire body of work. Like finding out Batman used homeless people for target practice. Or Jesus was a sith lord.

8·20 days agoI used to do this with Gameboy roms in the late 90s! I can’t remember which emulator, I think it was No$Gameboy or something that had a hex editor and I manually started changing bits and documenting what it did. Spent like a week just touching every digit, changing something documenting.
I didn’t even understand hexadecimal at the time either so it wasn’t even scientific.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux is awesome at home, but aren't y'all forced to use Windows at work?
81·26 days agoThinkpads running Linux for the staff.
We use open-source. Our own on-prem servers running Linux. A lot of our software is also open source. Our git, our office suite, our video and chat… All open source.
We just got rid of our Google Cloud connections a few months ago, but we’re still reliant on aws, cloudflare, etc.

- Apple says its fraud
- Locks account and refuses to elaborate
