Government that wants to spy on you but can’t directly prohibit encryption, so this is the work around. Prohibit porn, people go for VPN. Oohh, now we have to prohibit VPN which we can’t because its a required tool plus it’s really hard to prohibit… so what else can we do, then? Government backdoor keys ftw!

Technology@lemmy.world•Could the internet go offline? Inside the fragile system holding the modern world togetherEnglish
432·2 days agoThe Internet originally was designed to be able to survive and keep on going because by its original design, there wouldn’t be major key points to take out.
This is something that happened when major companies were allowed to run crazy unchecked and centralize everything. There are even parts of the world where people think that (for example) Facebook IS the Internet, as that is all that they can see.
This is an obvious bad thing yet it was allowed to go unchecked for decades now and here we are.
Could the current Internet completely break? Oh hells yes. Would it be a bad thing? Oh hells no. Let it die. The current Internet is a shit show that should have been aborted before it became what it is today.
what mostly will go down are last sites and large providers. Smaller or distributed sites like Lemmy will survive

We value your privacy, that’s why we’ll sell your data to anyone that is willing to pay us money. We will sell it to literally a thousand different companies which will mix and match and resell you data to thousands more
It so so so so extremely angers me that companies ALWAYS FUCKING LIE.
We value your privacy
FUCK YOU YOU DO NOT
We’re pissing u on your back and we tell you that you’re getting a refreshing shower, please thank us for this insult!
Just be fucking honest that you don’t give a shit, money is your only bottom line, and you would rape and murder my mother if you even thought it would make you money. Fuck all of you
I want a law that says that companies cannot behave like this. You cannot say “your call is important to us” every 2 minutes while I’ve been waiting on the phone for three hours to be able to return your piece of shit product that arrived broken, but you were too cheap to invest in basic customer support.
I want marketing and advertising outlawed. Completely. It’s allowed for companies to lay out their products, but you’re not. allowed. to. lie. No “we’re the best!” Fuck you, you’re the absolute worst. A company like Comcast should be forbidden from claiming they’re good at anything as they suck at everything and only manage to continue to exist because of fucking lying through their teeth with their marketing.
these sort of shit popups is just the next logical step that starts literally with the first words being an absolute lie
Fuck this shit

Elmo Musk literally is not an engineer or even understands basic engineering. All the real world engineering done at his company is done by actual engineers
What is his part in all those processes at jos companies, you ask?
Lying.
Literally lying. Its the only talent that Mr. Elmo has. Its the one thing he constantly does, at levels comparable to Trump.
Most claims he makes about any of his companies products are just plain lies. Tesla full self driving? Not even close, and by now i wonder if they’re actually capable of getting a Tesla off a parking lot without crashing it, let alone do a full cross country.
Same for SpaceX, where we definitely will go to Mars!never mind that reaching low earth orbit is about 1% of that task and he still can’t do that without blowing up his starshits. Hey, at least they blew up a banana over the Indian ocean.
Wanna know what Elmo’s contributions are?
Cyber truck.
Launching the car that was supposed to be for the founder of Tesla into low earth orbit just to he an asshole
The “idea” to use intercontinental ballistic rockets to transport people to the other side of the world “in 30 minutes”. This one I really really really do want him to try because tickets are CEO only expensive and nothing would make me laugh more than a bunch of stealing assholes all paying a million or so to just blow up on the launchpad.
Talking about launchpads, remember that Florida launch with a starship with a boat load of engines that also
failedwas a complete success because “it left the launchpad” and anything beyond that was extras? Yeah, that launchpad was absolutely obliterated, cars parked various kilometers away got pelted by concrete debris, an ecological area got polluted, and the launchpad was left in rubble because Elmo decided that flame diverters, you know, those things used since like the sixties of the previous century really weren’t necessary. That is of course keeping in mind that he US tax payer paid 3 billion to take the US to the moon and well, that too is about at 1-2% mission completed, there is nothing remotely ready.
Do I even have to mention Hyperloop? “Its just another air hockey table, its not that hard!”
Meanwhile he keeps asking Tesla for a trillion dollars as well, even though he just got a gold package from Tesla that was light the highest payout in human history, even though Tesla makes a fraction of the cars that large brands make, ans even though he sent the extremely overvalued company (overvalued thanks to his constant lying about aaaalll the great things that are right there ready, just around the corner if you only pay me more money!!) right of a cliff with his Nazi antics combined with the laughable Nazirustbucket he designed…
This is the guy asking for just a trillion dollar bro, I will make this work, bro! TRUST ME!

With most economic crashes, the rich get even richer. This time it’s different, though.
Right now, the top 8 richest men in the world have as much wealth as the bottom 50%. Homelessness world wide is at an all time high, and a huge swath of people can’t afford all the basic necessities anymore.
If an economic crash happens now, will the 99% of the people finally wake up and just TAKE the resources from that 1%, like it or not?
What do billionaires think will happen to them once shit really hits the fan?

Who says companies need to buy their own hardware?
We have datacenters for that, you rent the hardware one way or the other.
I’m saying that nobody should put all their eggs in one basket because if that basket breaks, you’re all fucked.
If you have the need for high availability then you don’t out all your servers in a single datacenter, or with a single provider
If everyone and their mother is with one provider, you’ll first notice that said provider gets expensive pretty quick and you’ll also notice that when shit goes down that half the fucking internet follows.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Anamorphic encryption against dictators - hiding message inside normal looking ciphertext
1·7 days agoNot sure about that, but this is basically a few clever tricks where you have two file systems in one volume. Obviously if the volume is, say, 10 gigs, you can only store 10 gigs in total on those filesystems, as they share the space.
You also, likely, wouldn’t want to fill up the drive too much
I don’t know what happened to it, I recall that, years ago, they found various weaknesses in the system but instead of fixing it, it seemed to be abandoned. I’ll start looking around if he there are updated open source versions

So your argument is that AWS centralization is good because Amazon is a good provider?
You do understand that they’re are loads of providers out there that are perfectly stable, but that are not Amazon?
I’ve never used it because I know how to manage a server, something you might want to expect from IT personnel that does development for companies, but there days let’s just ask Amazon todo it for us, we’re too lazy
You understand that that has nothing to do with this? So there are shitty providers out there, find a good one that is not “just amazon”
