Science@lemmy.ml•Chinese scientists reveal glowing plants that could light citiesEnglish
2·29 days agoI think we’re picturing a very different level of brightness achievable per plant. Replacing one street light would require a very large amount of glowing vegetation. Just the maintenance would be prohibitive. A city would need more gardeners than all other civil servants combined. And nevermind whether the fertilizer is produced from sewage or petrochemicals the runoff would be an enormous pollutant in its own right. Also it would be least effective in winter when the need for artificial light is greatest.

3·29 days agoImagine all the fertilizer and labor spent on the plants. I agree that more green space would benefit any city but I don’t think a monoculture of plants engineered for maximum bioluminescence would make a healthy base for it. Public lighting and public greening are two separate problems and trying to solve both at once means not doing as good a job at either.

6·29 days agoSounds like it might look cool but even if they were able to actually make enough light for a public space I doubt it would actually be more energy efficient to feed water and maintain extensive gardens down every street than to install some LED bulbs.

Obnoxious pedants like yourself reframe arguments you get in as debates so that when you lose you can gesture at some moderator that isn’t there or rulebook only you respect to indicate that the time for argument has passed

Anarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How do people actually fall into the "Tankie" mindset?English
13·4 months agoYou don’t consciously support capitalism but you uncriticaly accept and repeat all their lies about every serious alternative. You are a useful idiot of theirs. I suppose you also think that Venezuela is a ‘narco terror state’? And if not why do you believe the state department when it lies about its other enemies? And no, it does not follow that just because someone who actually thought nothing would be quiet that someone verbose must be dominated by propaganda. I went through an anarchist phase myself as a dumb college kid. What moved me past it was not exposure to Chinese propaganda but a more thorough examination of capitalist propaganda and how it informed my view of the rest of the world even as I nominally rejected its source. After deworming my brain a bit the numbers on emissions and renewable installations spoke for themselves.

15·4 months agoI hate to break it to you but you do in fact have beliefs. You might not think about them very hard, they might be totally incoherent, you may have passively absorbed them from capitalist propaganda, but you wouldn’t bother speaking if you were really as vacuous as you claim to be.

38·4 months agoSure individual veterans of many different militias would accrue individual military knowledge but no amount of individual knowledge is sufficient on its own, there is also a need for institutional knowledge. Leadership must have an intimate understanding of the force which it leads. Effective logistical practices must be developed. Long term relationships with other allied forces must be cultivated. All of this is achieved through the repeated iteration and refinement of military institutions over many subsequent conflicts. These necessities cannot be liquidated and reformed at will.

Anarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How do people actually fall into the "Tankie" mindset?English
45·4 months agoThe need to disassemble and then reform your military inbetween each action doesn’t strike you as an extreme limitation? Just how fast do you think you can pull a militia together if you want to do it from scratch in response to each case of capitalist aggression? I agree that both our movements would need much greater numbers in order to challenge the west militarily but I don’t see how an anarchist force could maintain those numbers if they had them when you only ever want to field completely green, newly formed units. Seems like your just feeding shelter cats to coyotes.

36·4 months agoMy approach to politics is “like team sports” only in that I acknowledge the existence of teams and have chosen one. Do you really think we’re all on the same side? When liberals insist that we all want what’s best for everyone, that there are no conflicting interests only conflicting methods, do you believe them?

There was a very good interview with some people from the KY Tennants union on the latest trillbillies. They made an interesting case that there’s more radical potential in tenant organizing than labor organizing within the US. I think both are necessary for longterm goals of the left but their position that immediate concessions might be more easily gained that way I found hard to argue with.
