    You have to download some “audio files” first

    These must be the ones that announce to the other party that call recording has started. Do you think they check the file checksums or could they be replaced with blank audio?

      So the google can spy on anyone’s phone calls without a consent (google screening), but if you want to record your own phone calls, there needs to be a mandatory warning. Makes total sense :D

      edit: but at least this enables automatic call recording, not just a button, plus automatic deletion of old recordings. This is actually pretty useful.

        Do you mean the call screening feature that Pixels have? When my Pixel does a call screen, it does announce to the other user that the call is being recorded.

        I don’t want to defend Google, but I don’t think that this is actually a sinister thing. In some areas you legally need to notify the other party the call is being recorded (two party consent). So this covers that base to prevent the user from accidentally breaking the law, and potentially shifting liability to Google.

      They probably don’t check the checksums and it’d be hard to replace without rooting your phone
