For more than two decades, Sergey Lavrov has been Russia’s top foreign diplomat, representing the Kremlin regime around the world.

    And then, he was gone.

Mr Lavrov, 75, has been the country’s foreign minister since 2004, and is widely rated as being among President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies.

But it has been three weeks since his last official appearance, sparking speculation he has fallen foul of Russia’s ruthless leader.

Since then, we have not really heard from him. The Russian state-owned news agency, Ria Novosti, published an interview with him last Sunday.

However, the photo of the foreign minister that accompanied it was taken about a year ago.

TASS, another state news agency, published a story featuring quotes from Mr Lavrov on Wednesday. However, the outlet noted the interview had actually been conducted with an Italian newspaper at an undisclosed date.

Again, there were no fresh photos.
