What a great word in today’s dating scene. Is it an older word that has been modified to be more modern?

You know that episode of Seinfeld where someone eats a candy bar with a knife and fork and it just spreads into the wild because people don’t really question it?

That list is going to send me down a rabbit hole looking for the etymology of words

Not commonly but every so often YouTubers I watch will start using it and it sticks for a prolonged period of time.

It was just the first thing that came to mind. I imagine there are other equally silly internet words out there.

I actually dislike that term a lot.

It’s like spunkgargleweewee. It seems immature and makes me feel more dismissive towards the argument. Maybe that also has to do with it being a catch all term and people seem less willing to give specific examples of how things are declining in quality.

I feel like Google Maps is going to be the biggest hurdle. I mentioned in another comment but a minimalist launcher might help.

Beyond that you could always consider getting a case for the Nokia phone off of Ali Express or looking up feature phone operating systems. For example KiaOS is quite popular among feature phones and appears on some Nokia ones.

I looked for this and it sort of doesn’t exist. I need it for a technologically challenged family member who gets hopelessly confused by smart phones. I have had the idea of writing an Android dumbify app that runs in kiosk mode (i.e. there is no way to exit it) that just disables everything except phone calls, and keeps the phone keypad permanently on the screen, like an old fashioned phone with physical buttons. It’s on my infinite todo list.

A minimalist launcher is probably the easiest possible solution to that. Aster for example is available on F-Droid. The only issue I could see is it not having a lock function that would prevent them from accidentally entering some sort of edit mode.

I don’t think that supports desktop games beyond source ports like Quake and Diablo though

The reason of pirating things because you would be offline has mostly disappeared. Partially because mobile data has become more affordable but also because more subscription based apps give you some way to consume content offline.

Where I see this the most is with music. Outside of those who want FLAC quality I don’t know of a lot of people who pirate music anymore.

Piracy used to be about providing the best possible quality. With popularity the quality got watered down.

Do you think that has to do with popularity though or a shifting attitude towards piracy?

I feel like there’s a lot of people who treat it like they would with streaming. Downloading the newest episode or season of a show and deleting it almost immediately. They don’t feel the need to store it for later.

People do keep stuff might be limited by their storage. A 1TB portable HDD can be great but if you are downloading entire shows it can devour it pretty quickly.

Either way I feel like a lot of people aren’t concerned about quality. They care about having immediate access to it.

I feel like there’s been a trend of people switching from alcohol to cannabis as its become more widely accepted but I know a lot of people who have ended up taking it to excess as well. I feel like the idea of being addicted to it still really doesn’t come up often and looking back that might be viewed as problematic.

I’m not against people using it or anything but I do feel bad for the people who have gotten to the point where they need to smoke to feel like themselves.

Probably Playnite as someone who games a lot. I like to mod my games and get them from different sources so being able to launch Northstar (a launcher for Titanfall 2) or FROST (a total conversion mod for Fallout 4) from one place is nice really nice. You can do a lot of this from within Steam but I find it works a lot smoother in Playnite. You can easily scrape box/cover art for unofficial games, have HowLongToBeat data readily available, have links to the Wikipedia and Nexus Mods pages, and edit the description below the game to say stuff like “Press T to open up trainer menu”.

Unfortunately it’s not available (natively) on Linux. I’ve used Lutris but I don’t believe it has the same customization options. I don’t think there is much in the way of themes besides dark mode and light mode or plugin support. That said I haven’t tried to customize it in several years. I’ve gotten complacent in that aspect and have just been adding them to Steam. I have heard GameHub is another option I have heard about recently but I thought it was mostly the same as Lutris. It turns out it does have some features I was looking for such as popularity scores, game description, and genre tags but I am not sure how the support is for themes and plugins. I feel like your right about complacency playing a big part.

It does make me wonder if a user of both MacOS and Windows would be more willing to consider using Linux over individuals who have only used Windows. Maybe someone who has used multiple operating systems would be more aware of what could be improved in their computing experience.

That said a lot of people seem to be migrating to Linux because of Windows 11

It is a niche open source social network. I feel like having enthusiastic Linux users is inevitable.

When does this ever happen?

One thing I don’t see myself getting used to is seeing family getting older. Watching them not be able to do the things they want and occasionally losing their memory can be tricky to deal with

If you owned a pet would you want your partner to know what to do if it starts choking?

A level head is definitely an asset but I feel like having some familiarity with the situation can help.

Even if they don’t feel capable of doing anything themselves it should help them identify symptoms of a medical emergency or relay relevant information to medical professionals.
