The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?
I’ll start… my name’s “MrShankles” and I do be commenting/posting from time to time
I feel like I recognise maybe 80% of the posters I see…
I always recognize my admin. *waves
There’s a 4/5 chance that Ada notices me?? 😯
o.O
I tend to recognize usernames I see at least once a day, if they’re phrases or words. Not if they’re like strings of random characters…
While 100% recognise you!
Seriously, big fan, keep up the good work <3
I recognise you!
Yay!
(Note to self: be on best behaviour, she’s onto me)
on blahaj.zone, that’s not difficult, considering that 80% of the posts come from totallynotjessica and adora :-)
I generally don’t recognize usernames and don’t look at them too much
There’s the guy who uses thorns (who I have tagged as Nigel þornberry)
There’s maybe a half-dozen frequent posters who I’m genuinely not sure if they’re masterful trolls, some kind of AI training bots, or just really need to go touch grass (preferably on their way to a therapist’s office.)
There’s one dude whose username just happened to stick out to me after having a random conversation or two with him and seeing him being a generally pretty decent dude around Lemmy, I tagged him “this guy seems cool” at some point, and at some point it occurred to me that he might appreciate knowing that, so I shot him a message, and sure enough he did. I now consider him to be a pretty good friend, which is a new experience for me, I’ve never really been one to have online friends, I (somehow) do pretty well at making friends in meatspace and have never really felt a need to seek out an online friendship.
There’s a handful of people who have said some incredibly dumb shit that I’ve tagged (for example one dude who I tagged “Tankie, down vote and ignore” although the last few times I’ve seen him pop up it seems like he may have mellowed out a bit, so good for him)
Nigel þornberry
Made me laugh :D
Fully-qualified usernames:
There’s the guy who uses thorns (who I have tagged as Nigel þornberry)
That’d be @Sxan@piefed.zip.
þat is indeed þe guy
I also love how bent-out-of-shape people get over the thorns.
I haven’t stalked his profile, but I feel like every time I’ve seen him come up he’s also seemed like a pretty cool and reasonable dude (I suppose it’s possible he’s off being a dick in the parts of Lemmy I don’t frequent, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt)
I have snarked him about it, myself. I have no objection to overtly affected personal expression (no hypocrite I). It’s just that reading a thorn unexpectedly feels like stubbing my toe, but in my brain.
for me the bogus rationalizations took it from something I could cope with to something that actively irritates me. maybe that’s part of the art.
Maybe. People usually have good reasons for doing things, to supplement the real reasons.
Sxan talks to me all the time and has always been great. I barely register the thorns now.
It’s harmless but it’s deliberately antisocial which rubs people the wrong way. They’re going out of their way to make their comments harder to reader.
I’ve never had a bad interaction with them but I do think it’s kind of obnoxious attention-seeking behavior
He’s one of my favorites.
I’m also a Sxan fan
Shout-out to “Nigel þornberry”
I’ve the thorn guy tagged as “uses thorns” and am now shamed about my lack of creativity.
I had someone else tagged as “second guy to use thorns” but they’re a lot less consistent about it.
Added the tag now 😂
Ah Nigel þornberry. I appreciate the dedication to thorns, but ended up writing a script which replaces thorns in their texts because they stand out too much.
What happened to flying squid? They had some health problems and then talked about moving and then disappeared.
I think this place wasn’t too healthy for them mentally, and I’m fairly certain after moving they just bowed out of coming back and focused on rebuilding their life in a new country, or at least I hope they did. Lemmy also skews heavily US American (less so than reddit but still largely) and so maybe they just wanted to disconnect from things here in the USA. If I was in a new place I think I’d spend more time trying to get my bearings locally than reading endless news about the place I just left.
If you check in lemvotes you can see some activity from time to time, so I don’t think they are dead. It could be a federation issue but they at least appear to have logged in and had some vote activities in December.
Regardless they did not have a healthy relationship with Lemmy. They were averaging something on the order of 15 comments, per hour, per day. That’s a comment every 4 minutes, all day, every day, for years.
Idk. We should still probably build something to remember them by. Or to piss on, depending on how you viewed them. They were very political and were doing a lot of “pre blaming” for the, at the time, election which hadn’t happened yet. I think it may have broken them.
I think it may have broken them.
sure as fuck broke me.
whatever hope I had left in humanity putrefied.
They spent a lot of time traveling and waiting for medical tests and results with their mom. I attributed the activity to the stress and excess time on their hands.
Flying Squid was an auto-block for me, as soon as I made my account. He always used to ban me because he couldn’t win arguments with me in the comments.
Edit to spill the tea:
Hello Lemmy.world admin team, I am writing to complain about the conduct of the moderator FlyingSquid.
On two occasions I have had negative interactions with FlyingSquid on the /world community, both times he has used, or threatened to use, his moderator powers against me, because of his personal disagreements with me.
I am happy to refer you to both conversations:
In this conversation, we had a long conversation about laws and politics. Personally, I feel he acted in bad faith on several occasions throughout our conversation, in my opinion, he was trying to bait me into getting upset so he could righteously ban me.
And your silly prediction is wrong. I am not going to ban you for this despite the incivility rule violation. I am just going to stop talking to you.
But you have just earned yourself the eye of a moderator who will not tolerate your rule-breaking with anyone else. Including if I see any in your recent history.
More recently, we had a conversation today:
Again, in this conversation, he was, in my opinion, highly rude, dismissive and arguing in bad faith. He even admitted as much. I said I wasn’t interested in talking with him, he continued to push me for an answer, and then said:
You didn’t let me down, because I knew you didn’t actually have an answer
I completely understand that sometimes people get heated or struggle to deal with arguments where they care about the topic, so I am totally willing to look past that. However, I am not willing to look past his abuse of power.
What a bullshit cop-out. I have asked you multiple times what the next step is and you’re now claiming I’m not interested?
That’s two lies you’ve told about me now. That is coming close to trolling. This is seemingly a pattern for FlyingSquid - goading people he disagrees with into becoming frustrated with his bad-faith arguments, then accusing them of “trolling” when the people he experiences push-back, and using that as an excuse to ban someone he disagrees with.
I was writing a response to his post pointing out that he was arguing in bad faith when I accidentally submitted it half-way through, when he suspended me for “trolling”.
I do not believe that he has the disposition to be a moderator if he gets so upset at a polite discussion that he feels compelled to use moderator powers to silence dissent. I go out of my way to be as polite, kind and compassionate as possible and to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I do not believe we should allow those in a position of trust or power to use that to settle their personal disputes. I know there has been some issues with that recently regarding the vegan community so I am hopeful that you will do the right thing and either remove his moderator powers or at the very least let him know that his abuse of powers is not tolerated.
I would prefer not to make a community spectacle out of this, hence the email.
Thanks and all the best,
Yeah, squid did deep and lasting damage to the fediverse with how they used bans to editorialize communities and those scars remain implicit today.
At the same time they were a prolific and dedicated poster and that’s huge in a small community like ours. I didn’t like them, at all, and I think they had some deep problems around politics, identity, and some very weird narcissistic tendencies and victims complex. But I think they were also an important member of the community, if one who shouldn’t have played the role of moderator.
Last I saw, moved to the UK, was looking at getting a job there, and I assume stopped using the Threadiverse to dedicate more time to real life. Doesn’t look like he’s been commenting in a year:
https://lemmy.world/post/25764717/15184325
I told a member of an LGBT organization in York, UK that I would be happy for any help I can get regarding finding me a job above the UK family visa income threshold so my gay daughter can stay here longer than six months after he offered to look over my CV and give me pointers… for the glory of the empire?
I recognize kolanki (I doubt I’m spelling it correctly, but the person with the large blue name), pugjesus, the picard maneuver, violet08, that fucking cm0002 with the 5,000 alt accounts, and that’s about it.

Also, I can’t resist: Every dog has his day.
(Kolanaki has a canine fursona.)
(Kolanaki has a canine fursona.)
I changed it recently. Still kind of a canine, but it is technically a Poon from Atlyss, though the race customizations have dog-like parts I used.
Poon is a very funny name. I really should start Atlyss today.
similar, but also Five and Cheese_Greater

We used to see a MargotRobbie but they stopped. Dunno why. They committed to the bit, though.
MargotRobbie

Ladybutterfly or something like that
That’s me! BTW do you know where I could hire a cult leader? I’m looking for one atm
I see you on me_irl and handful of other subs quite a bit.
Holy smokes, i just checked and you have 8000 posts!
Yep that’s me! Just trying to bring people a little bit of happiness
Fully-qualified username: @LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone
Oh haaaiiii
I’ve been here for 2 years and I only recognize violet08 and the_Picard_maneuver. Oh and Nicole, the girl with glasses who wanted me
Stay away from my girlfriend
*our girlfriend
I could recognise a violet or PugJesus post without nametags! I enjoy both posters’ content although violet’s is a bit concerning and less educational, lol. Oh, and the guy who only posts anti-Western narratives memes, he always gets downvoted but he keeps at it like Marx’s strongest soldier 😅. There was also this maniac called Satan’sSomethingSomething I just had to block on two different accounts. Finally, there are several posters I have personally tagged cause I regularly see eye to eye with them, or at least I consider reasonable, prosocial and capable of having a normal conversation (flaxvert, Maeve, VikingHippie, among others). 👍
Fully-qualified usernames:
- Did violet08_@lemmy.world elsewhere.

- @VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf
Ty for your service!
Yeah, you’ve got the list of the same people I generally clock as known users.
only posts anti-Western narratives memes
yugthos or sth
i often wonder whether they get paid
but honestly i prefer 1 account that’s posting propaganda over 10000 small accounts that are posting propaganda.
also some of their takes are actually good.
I tag folks based off interactions, so after a couple years on here there’s a lot of names I recognize. Most of them are regular posters or admins (Pugjesus, Stametz, Violet08, Mrdown, Picard Manuver, Geneva Convenience, ada, db0, etc. who don’t need to be bothered with tags) or people who I have a special friendship with like @AntiBullyRanger (I really hope you’re doin’ okay) or my legit bro @toynbee@piefed.social
Then theres various regular commentators on my NSFW posts like @StrangeBedfellow@lemmynsfw.com and @Keepthoseeyeslockedonmine@kinkycats.org who I appreciate a ton!
(Personally, I was once asked out of the blue by @WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today to give my opinion in a discussion about battery tech. I think at the end this will probably be where I consider my life to have peaked.)
@Warl0k3 @MrShankles @WorldsDumbestMan @toynbee
Thank you, this is sweet
Aaaand, I remember you too for a certain style. How did your uh…rather colorful descriptions work out for you?
@WorldsDumbestMan very well thanks. I like to say what I see and I like to paint a picture with words. I’m not trying to be pretentious or anything, just express myself.
I hope you’re good too!

<3
RuhRoh I just did those too lol. Pings for everyone!
Also Toy if u are responsible for the tiles and have been holding out I will be so mad
Nah, but a few years after I chose this username I was walking around Philadelphia and randomly saw one in the street. Basically no one who’s part of my offline life uses that name so it was weird to encounter unexpectedly.
That the name is referencing the tiles is usually people’s first guess, but I chose this long before I’d heard of them. When the 2001 X-Men movie came out I was looking for a new username. In the movie they just show the character Toad in his villainous role, but in the novelization they cover more of his life, including his secret identity of Mortimer Toynbee. I liked it and adopted it. It’s almost never taken anywhere, either, which is nice.
I didn’t expect to show up in this thread at all, let alone multiple times. It’s nice to know I’ve made an impression!
Toynbee
The name sticks out because it’s so uncommon and I’ve always loved Bradbury, though I wouldn’t consider this particular story to be one of my favorites.
Fascinating - I believe I’ve heard of the story, but never read it or any summaries of it.
Based on the referenced historian, perhaps I am that traveler, as this was many years before I was born.

But it cannot be, for I would never voluntarily allow it to be capitalized …
I guess it’s like a pat on the head for being considered notable, so probably as long as there aren’t too many, they’ll be tolerant. :-) Probably.
Well at least one person on that list thinks I’m an open nazi so… Probably I should have rethought the tags. But ah well I’m tipsy lets go.
O_O who is that?
I don’t want to overly directly call someone out/incite brigading/etc. but I probably should have been more clear given I do tend to irk people. Hilariously though I’m not talking about the person who downvoted me (sorry @mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com, I completely forgot we got into it recently, I did not mean you)

I mostly recognize you for consistently having pretty good takes even when most of the thread isn’t
Lol thank you, it for sure hasn’t made me the most popular person but at the very least it’s not boring.
I can’t believe I didn’t get you on the list. You’re great! I can’t remember exactly why I tagged you as “lesbOG” but it’s pretty funny. Or at least, I think it’s funny. And really, what else could possibly matter?
Yeahhhhh people on here sometimes behave in ways I’m going to be charitable and describe as contentious or particularly emotionally committed. Like all the internet as a whole has had that problem since I was a kid browsing forums, but it’s certainly sometimes a bit much here.
And I absolutely love that tag lol
Actually there is one user I appreciate seeing around that I didn’t see mentioned anywhere here. Toomanypancakes is delightful
If they comment/post a lot and use an avatar or have emojis in their display name, I probably recognize them.
Very few I recognize by name alone.
I recognize you! Because of the lots of emojis and I always like your comments lol
There’s also a dude/lady around here that has a Taiwan flag in their name that always has really thought-provoking comments (even though they’re sometimes received as controversial takes that get downvoted from time to time). I always take the time to read their stuff.
I almost forgot! Godric with their little rainbow gif avatar. Seeing their posts always puts a smile on my face.
Oh the taiwan-person! I recognize them too, I never remember their username but the flag always sticks out to me for some reason
I’m the exact opposite. My client doesn’t have avatars and I gloss over emojis but I remember most folks who are furry or furry-adjacent, especially you because my client tags upvote counts and you’re at like +165.
Hey :)
You’re probably the most recognizable commenter out there and one of my favorite people on the platform. I see you everywhere and I don’t think I’ve ever noticed you having a negative interaction with anyone.
I have you at +520 with zero downvotes, one of the highest vote totals I have registered, though admittedly I manually transferred over the vote total from your previous yiffit account.
(My client, Voyager, also doesn’t show custom usernames or avatars, so you’re entirely recognizable via your actions alone. Kudos!)
Oh man, lots. Ada, Kolanki, WorldsDumbestMan, SatansMaggottyCumFart, Neidu, LadyButterfly, CaptainLezbian, CptAggravated, that one guy with the Chinese symbols whose mom is a piece of work, Stamets when he’s posting, Sunshine, Blaze, DistantSounds, Sodalite - the list goes on and on.
I may spend too much time here, lol.
I use voyager and don’t see display names, but I’m willing to bet the person with a Chinese display name and shitty parents is @DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works
Clearly I also spend too much time on here lol
xD
Since I got summoned by a @ , gonna infodump cuz why not lol:
Funny enough now that my mom went to China for a 1-month visit, and now it’s like 1 week in and I feel so sad about her absense from home…
The house feels so much more depressing… :/
I mean I guess this is a sort of “trial run” of what her eventual death would feel like…
Like… now I can call her… cuz now its just separated by an ocean, in this era, we have instantaneous communications…
someday it’ll be separated by a barrier between the mortal realm and… whatever world beyond… the afterlife… spirit realm… or whatever…
I guess this is what my mom meant when she said she wanted to get married give birth to children… this same emptiness that I’m feeling…
I might never find love in life :(
Funny enough my older brother is also in China right now because mom pressured him to do marriage 🤣
(My parents are arranged marriage btw)
oof, that’s a bad hit buddy. love is one of those things where the more intention you put into looking for it the harder it is to find, other than arranged marriage. honestly if you’re that worried about it though, have you considered going that route?
also crazy you’re missing your mom that bad despite her abuse but I definitely get it. i was living with my dad for a while and he was moving out and I was staying and I couldn’t fucking wait for him to be gone up until the moment he was leaving I started crying really bad… did not understand those emotions at all but I often don’t.
hang in there ❤️
Oh remember you too, but idk what to do about your issues :/
I have minimum good advice besides patience is a virtue.
deleted by creator
Yep, that’d be them! Always forget your display name and user id can be different (know there’s someone who uses this to hilarious [to giant nerds like me] effect by having it be [x]@threads.com or something)
Oh hey I’m being recognized. I definitely spend too much time here. Also my teachers may have been right when I was growing up, I really don’t know how to shut up.
For what it’s worth, the recognition is “they seem to have a good head on their shoulders”
I also recognize a lot of those, damn lol
When I start recognizing a username it’s usually because that person is about to get blocked. Applies to quite many users mentioned here too.
I think the small size of the platform is a bit of an issue in this case. The only way to not get “famous” here is by constantly having to make new accounts.
I was thinking the same thing.
The only usernames I recognise are the people I find insufferable.
I used to think that blocking that type of person led to being in an echochamber. More recently I’ve decided that echochamber or not - my participation here is a lot more enjoyable without them.
The thing is, if a user only ever comments “bUt ShE sUpPoRtEd GEnOcIde”, I’ve kind of received the message already so I can hang up the phone?
I happen to recognize your username. Not for any particular reason, and you’re on +6 in my tracking, so I guess that’s a good thing
“He’s just this guy, you know?”
That whole bit is SO GOOD. Everything from bang the rocks together, worst dressed sentient being, best bang since the big one, culminating in Zaphod’s jist zis guy, you know? 😂
It’s right up there with the ‘space, it says, is big’ and might even be better than the bit about the marketing division of the sirius cybernetics corporation.
There’s a guy who thinks I’m some kind of troll or bot and tries to “call me out” by name every once in a while, I suppose that counts.
Personally, I try not to pay close attention to usernames - I want to engage with what’s said, not form opinions about the people saying it.
Do they have strong opinions about AI and tendency to dig through your message history?
They do indeed. There is perhaps a possibility we’re thinking of the same fellow.
Truly one of the strangest people I’ve ever encountered here. I finally gave in and just blocked them after every attempt at a coherent exchange failed miserably. Nothing I say registers and everything I get back has nothing to do with what was said before. I can’t even accuse them of being a bot because I have better discussions with actual bots.
This is gonna sound really terrible, but… I generally don’t recognize people by name so much… maybe something dyslexia related? I think there are a couple of rare exceptions, like the user with two letters and then four numbers in their name.
I recognize lots of avatars, as I scroll around, but I don’t generally register the names or even descriptions of the images, just kind of like… my brain just remembers purplish-blob shape, red glowy circle, monochromatic goblet.
Oh, and dancing banana, and blue name furry. I actually remember his, it’s Kolanki I think
All of you users with no avatar, go get one so I remember you all please! It’s an accessability aid in a way :p
Wait, Lemmy has avatars? I use an app 99% of the time, and the app doesn’t have them so I never realized that was a thing, lol. Whoops.
- Avatars (image which shows in full size on user page and thumbnail form by their name in the Lemmy Web UI)
- Display names (a user can have a different name appear in place of their username, which is how some users stick Unicode in their name. I don’t like this feature, because you need the “real” username, not the displayname, to reference users in such a way that Lemmy will generate a hyperlink to them, and I think that referencing users is complicated enough to create a usability barrier for people without the extra complexity).
- A banner (which displays on the user page and is larger than the avatar image)
- Bio text.
@Sxan@piefed.zip, which was mentioned in another comment in this thread, is a good example of someone who makes use of all four.
Same here. And the same for reddit, I was surprised when I learned reddit had avatars. I’m surprised that lemmy has them, too.
All of you users with no avatar, go get one so I remember you all please! It’s an accessability aid in a way :p
Frankly, this could be implemented client-side. If there’s no avatar set by the remote user, then have the client or Web UI or whatever hash the username/home instance pair and then use the bits of that hash as inputs to procedurally-generate an image. There are a number of forum systems that do this.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identicon
An Identicon is a visual representation of a hash value, usually of an IP address, that serves to identify a user of a computer system as an effectively random form of avatar while protecting the user’s privacy. The original Identicon was a 9-block graphic, and the representation has been extended to other graphic forms by third parties.
(Note that using an IP as an input to the hash, as is mentioned here, is not really a good idea, since the IPv4 address space is small enough that one can reverse the hash by brute-forcing it to obtain the user’s IP address, and the IPv6 address space is only sparsely-used, so I bet that one could do the same there with a bit more work.)
Doesn’t stackoverflow do that? Or some other popular website… Slashdot?
Not Slashdot that I recall, and looking at it, looks like it still doesn’t, but it looks like Stack Overflow does.
Huh. I never remember they’re an option on lemmy because they don’t show on Boost, but that’s a really good point for accessibility. Thanks for pointing it out!
I too am an avatar fan.
As someone who thinks almost entirely in words it’s never something I would have considered as an accessibility feature. I’ll try to think up an avatar though, unfortunately that aforementioned thinking in words always makes it hard for me
